We are the nation’s first plant conservation organization and the only one solely focused on New England’s native plants
More than a century ago, when ecology was a new word, our founders organized what is now called Native Plant Trust to stop the destruction of native plants. Today, as native plants face the greatest wave of threats since the last mass extinction, we are still a national leader in native plant conservation, horticulture, and education. We save native plants in the wild, grow them for gardens and restorations, and educate others on their value and use.

The nurseries listed here are good suppliers of native plant material, based on our research and site visits. Our decision to include them is an independent editorial one; they are not paying for advertising. We include a broad diversity of suppliers, to serve the different needs of both amateur gardeners and professional landscapers— everything from small one-person operations to large nurseries selling millions of plants each year.

The New England Botanical Club (NEBC), founded in 1896, is a non-profit organization promoting the study of plants of North America, especially the flora of New England and adjacent areas. The Club publishes the peer-reviewed journal Rhodora, holds monthly meetings during the academic year (usually at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts), maintains an herbarium of more than 258,000 sheets, has a small library, and annually grants research and publication awards.

The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. is dedicated to assisting our member clubs with education and appreciation of Horticulture, Landscape and Floral Design, Gardening and Environmental Concerns.

MassWildlife offers a variety of print publications for those interested in learning more about wildlife, insects, plants, as well as rare or threatened species and habitats. NOTE: Some items are available at a discount if purchased in bulk or if you are an educator. Some items are free if picked up at a MassWildlife office , but have a postage fee if mailed.

USDA Rural Development offers loans and grants for a variety of activities.
Other than those that are federal-state partnerships, USDA also offers grants and loans through several different federal agencies. Some are for farmers—others are targeted to associations of grower groups, like MFGA.

The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources’ (MDAR) mission is to ensure the long-term viability of agriculture in Massachusetts. Through its four divisions – Agricultural Conservation & Technical Assistance, Agricultural Markets, Animal Health, and Crop and Pest Services – MDAR strives to support, regulate and enhance the rich diversity of the Commonwealth’s agricultural community to promote economically and environmentally sound food safety and animal health measures, and fulfill agriculture’s role in energy conservation and production. The Department’s divisions are working to fulfill this mission via the 60+ programs and services it offers.
