Twisted Tales: Movies

A collection of stories that have been reimagined and retold.

"10 Things I Hate About You" by Touchstone Home Entertainment

A loose adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Cameron is the new kid in school who becomes smitten with the beautiful Bianca. But Bianca's overprotective and domineering father forbids Bianca to date unless her older sister Kat, an surly and hostile senior, does. In a bid to get Kat a boyfriend, Cameron sets up a plan to have the school stud, Joey Donnar, bribe Patrick Verona, an outcast senior with a rumor-filled past, to take Kat out on dates so he can go to the school's homecoming dance with Bianca. However, neither Patrick or Kat expect their relationship to lead to something so much more. Heath Ledger's American movie debut.

"Cruel Intentions" by Columbia TriStar Home Video

Cruel Intentions is based on the classic French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The plot of the film is pretty similar to the book, in which a rich aristocrat promises to spend the night with another aristocrat if he'll seduce the innocent Cecile, who has "stolen" her boyfriend. Even the ending, when Kathryn Merteuil's (the Marquise de Merteuil in the book) involvement in the whole scheme is revealed, is super similar. Obviously, the movie modernizes this and sets it in a high school.

"Into the Woods" by Walt Disney Pictures

A modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel, all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

"Clueless" by Paramount Home Entertainment

15-year-old Cher, the matchmaking Beverly Hills High schooler, has shopping and boys on her mind. She leads a hectic lifestyle but keeps it all together until she starts to fall in love and finds she's 'clueless'. A loose adaptation of Emma, Jane Austen's 19th-century comedy of manners.

"The Great Gatsby" by Warner Bros.

A would-be writer Nick Carraway leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits.

"My Fair Lady" by Warner Home Video

Even Pygmalion is based on something else — in this case, a Greek myth in which Pygmalion creates a statue that he then falls in love with. In Shaw's play, this concept is very loosely adapted to a story about a flower girl who takes diction lessons. My Fair Lady follows Shaw's play pretty closely and has the same characters and basic plot, though some details are changed and it adds music.
